Why health foodies love bone broth.
Ever since I started the GAPS diet, 3 years ago, I have been in love with bone broth. I basically went from vegan, to full time broth sipper over the course of 2 months and I noticed some amazing benefits within the first few days.My skin was glowing (I honestly have never gotten as many compliments on my skin from total strangers as I did when I was drinking bone broth daily) my digestion problems went away, and I was never sick! I attribute this to the high levels of minerals, gelatin, and collagen.Bone broth also supports healthy bones and teeth. As the bones simmer, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and other trace minerals are leeched out into this liquid gold broth. If you're convinced that you need to be taking a calcium magnesium supplement, go for broth! It's easier to absorb and tastier than any capsule.Bone broth prevents the wear and tear of aging. The cartilage which is plentiful in a full chicken or other bird carcass is broken down into chondratin and glucosamine which are easy to absorb. This aids the body in building cartilage, and maintaing skin elasticity. A great addition to any athletes diet. With all of these benefits, no wonder broth has become a fad. But I find it silly that people actually buy it at health food stores when it is so cheap and easy to make at home! If you haven't started making it yet, I urge you to give this recipe a try.
All you need :• A few organic, pastured animal bones or a chicken carcass. (I buy massive bags of chicken necks or feet, which last me for weeks. It only costs a few dollars!)• A crock pot or stove stock pot• A cup or two of veggies (carrots, onion, garlic, celery) which I don't bother cutting• 1-2 Tbs apple cider vinegar• 1 tsp celtic sea saltDirections are simple:1 Throw bones into a crock pot2 Cover with boiling filtered water to the top of the crock pot3 Add a splash of apple cider vinegar (this assist in the bones in releasing minerals)4 Turn crock pot on high and let sit for 10-12 hours5 Throw in some celery, carrots, garlic and onions for added minerals and flavour6 Let it cook on low for another 4 hours.7 Store in mason jars in the fridge for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for months. Make sure not to put the lid on the mason jar in the freezer or your broth will expand and crack the jars. I can't tell you how many times I did this until I figured out the why the jars were cracking. Silly me.8.Invest in a quality, plastic-free insulated container because you will become addicted and want to carry hot bone broth with you everywhere you go! I love my Klean Kanteen. Add salt to taste!Do you drink bone broth? Any secrets you use to perfect the taste?
