5 non-diet related tips to improve thyroid health

thyroidThyroid problems are not uncommon, especially for women. In fact, I am surprised whenever I hear of a client that doesn't have a thyroid problem. Unfortunately many of the steps taken to lose the extra weight from a metabolic condition are actually making the problem worse. Here are the 5 non-diet suggestions that I make to anyone suffering from an under or over active thyroid 1. Cut back on exercise:I know it can be frustrating to rapidly gain weight when you have an under- active thyroid.  However, the method of eating less and exercising more will just dig you deeper into a hole.  Exercising, especially in the form of cardio can be very stressful to the body.  When our body is stressed the adrenal glands begin to secrete the hormone cortisol.  This hormone is associated with weight gain, especially in the abdomen.  As if that weren't bad enough, the adrenal glands work to support the thyroid gland. If both of them are under stress, your thyroid has a very small chance of recovering. Swap out running for long walks in nature, stretching and small amounts of weight lifting.2. Relax & get enough sleepStress is often a contributor to thyroid problems whether it be physical, mental or emotional. If you have a thyroid problem you're likely overly tired. Rather than powering through the day with an extra coffee, listen to your body.  Go to bed early and wake up naturally.3. Take a break from the electronicsThere is much research showing that electromagnetic frequencies have a negative effect on hormone production, particularly in regards to the thyroid.  Simple steps such as using headphone when talking on the phone, sleeping far away from your phone and computer and shutting off the wifi when you are sleeping can give your thyroid a much needed break which can stimulate recovery.4. Start earthingEarthing is a powerful way to reduce stress and neutralize effects of electromagnetic frequencies.  It is proven to reduce inflammation by donating extra electrons to stabilize free-radicals in the body.  I have heard first hand, some impressive testimonials of those initially skeptical about earthing. 5. Be at peace with your foodMany people that have a thyroid imbalance are worried about every food they eat. Diet is heavily related to thyroid stimulation but having a severe fear of foods whether it be grains, fat, or dairy can be counterproductive.  It may actually have more ability to shut off your thyroid than  eating the suspected food allergen. Do your best to be at peace with your food, and eat in a relaxed state.  Refrain from thinking of foods as "evil" or "scary".If you do have a thyroid problem I recommend meeting with a nutrition consultant in order to naturally support your hormones gain an understanding of your specific dietary needs.
